Replacement options for Lynchburg missing teeth

July 9, 2016

Dentures LynchburgMissing even one natural tooth effects surrounding teeth and supporting gums and jaw bone. Plus, how you look, speak and eat change when you have a smile gap. Perry Family Dentistry urges you to investigate modern tooth replacement options such as Lynchburg dentures, dental implants and bridgework.

Lynchburg fixed bridgework

For years, the optimal choice for replacing one, 2 or more teeth in a row was the fixed bridge.

Dr. James Peery Jr. and Dr. James Peery III offer beautiful, functional and natural-looking fixed bridgework.

One or more pontic or artificial, teeth fill the smile gap created by extraction, congenital absence of teeth or oral injury. Constructed according to oral impressions, digital xrays and Dr. Peery’s instructions, the fixed bridge permanently secures to adjacent natural teeth via porcelain crowns.

While the fixed bridge provides great aesthetics and ability to eat and speak normally, it does not preserve gum tissue or jaw bone. These can recede post tooth loss. Additionally, the dentist must remove substantial amounts of tooth enamel on the neighboring teeth so they can accept the porcelain crowns.

Lynchburg dentures

These artificial teeth are removable, replacing several teeth (partial denture) or an entire arch (full denture). They normalize appearance, supporting facial muscles. They also approximate normal biting and chewing and allow patients to speak clearly. For best fit and function, dentures must be relined or replaced as time goes by and oral tissues change in size and shape.

There are 3 basic types of full Lynchburg dentures. One is called immediate as the dentist places them right after extraction. This allows the patient to go home with teeth in his mouth. However, as tissues heal and shrink, immediate dentures must be relined or even replaced.

Another denture type is conventional. The dentist places these full dentures right after tooth sockets have healed. Fit is optimal. Both immediate and conventional dentures stay in place via the mouth’s natural suction.

Finally, the partial denture consists of artificial teeth mounted on a metal frame and held in place with clasps affixed to neighboring teeth. Fully removable, the “partial” completes a smile, but does not preserve the integrity of the jaw bone.

Lynchburg dental implants

Dental implants replace missing teeth better than any other prosthetic. They may be placed singly, in multiples or can support bridgework or full dentures.

The secret to the success of Lynchburg dental implants is osseointegration. Dr. Peery places implants during a safe, in office procedure. Using oral surgery guided by sophisticated 3-dimensional CT scans, the doctor inserts the titanium implant device right into the jaw. With time, the implant and jaw fuse, creating a superior foundation for the artificial tooth above the surface of the gums.

Dental implants boast a success and retention rate of more than 90 percent. Patients in good oral and general health qualify for Lynchburg implants. With good oral hygiene at home and regular cleanings and check-ups at Peery Family Dentistry, dental implants are likely the final tooth replacement a patient needs.
