A tooth extraction is never your dentist’s first choice. It is always best to keep your natural teeth when possible. However, sometimes this procedure is necessary to preserve the health of the rest of your smile. Many patients worry about tooth extractions because of some of the misconceptions that they have heard and seen in the media. The good news is that we are here to bust some of the most common myths about tooth extractions so that you know what to expect.

Myth 1: Tooth Extractions Are Painful

The most common myth out there is that tooth extractions are painful. Fortunately, with modern dental techniques and technology, having a tooth pulled isn’t as uncomfortable as it was back in the day. Before your procedure begins, your dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic, so you shouldn’t be able to feel the area that your dentist is working on. You will likely experience some soreness afterward, but this can be managed with your over-the-counter and prescribed pain relievers.

Myth 2: Tooth Extraction Recovery Is a Long Process

It usually only takes about one or two weeks for the socket to heal after a tooth extraction. However, many patients only experience soreness and discomfort for a few days after their procedure. This can be managed with the pain relievers recommended by your dentist. By carefully following your dentist’s aftercare instructions, you should be back to your normal schedule soon!

Myth 3: Only Wisdom Teeth Have to Be Extracted

This is the case for a lot of people, but everyone is different. It is common to require wisdom teeth removal, but not everyone does. Some people need additional teeth to be removed for one reason or another. This can include severe decay, injury, or limited space in the mouth.

Myth 4: Extracted Teeth Don’t Need to Be Replaced

Depending on why you need to have your tooth extracted, you may need to have it replaced to prevent future oral health concerns. When there are gaps present in your smile, your other teeth will naturally shift around to fill in the spaces. The jawbone no longer needs to be stimulated in that area either, so it shrinks over time. Talk to your dentist about tooth replacement options, if necessary, so you can avoid dental issues later on.

Tooth extractions aren’t as terrible as the myths may have you believe. By putting these misconceptions behind us, your smile will be good as new in just a matter of time!
