There are all sorts of new fads that circulate online all of the time. However, there is a lot of misinformation on the internet, so you need to do your own research as well. It can be difficult to tell the difference between a helpful hack and doing something that could be harming your body or your smile. You certainly don’t want to try out a popular new trend only to discover that you have been damaging your smile. Here are a few fads that you should be wary of so that you don’t end up with a dental emergency on your hands.

Apple Cider Vinegar

There are many different health benefits from apple cider vinegar. Whether you have an upset stomach, sore throat, or are looking to lower your cholesterol, there is someone out there claiming that apple cider vinegar will work wonders. However, this remedy isn’t the best for your teeth. Your teeth are vulnerable to acidic substances, and this type of vinegar is so acidic that it can cause your enamel to erode. If you are consuming apple cider vinegar, be sure to rinse your mouth out with water afterwards to help the pH of your mouth return to normal.

Lemon Juice Detox

Most of the time, this detox is used as an effort to lose weight. This recipe includes a mixture of lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and water. Just like apple cider vinegar, this is a very acidic mixture that increases your likelihood of developing cavities. Another problem is that this 10-day cleanse doesn’t include any solids. This means that you won’t be producing enough saliva since you aren’t chewing. You need to have a significant amount of saliva in order to prevent cavities, gum disease, and enamel erosion.

Sparkling Water

This beverage is a great alternative to drinking soda, sports drinks, and energy drinks. However, it isn’t completely safe for your smile. Sparking water is also acidic, so it lowers the pH in your mouth. This means weaker enamel and more cavities! Stick to regular still water instead.

Kombucha

This is a fermented tea that has grown in popularity recently. Some of its benefits include detoxification, improved digestion, immune system stimulation, arthritis relief, and even cancer prevention. However, kombucha is acidic, and many store-bought brands contain a lot of added sugar. This means more cavities and other oral health problems.

Activated Charcoal

These days, a lot of new oral hygiene products contain activated charcoal. The idea behind these types of products is that they absorb toxins and stains, causing whiter teeth and healthier gums. However, there is not enough evidence to prove that they are an effective solution to discoloration. These products also tend to be too abrasive for the teeth. This causes the gradual wearing away of the enamel.

Popular trends aren’t always the best option. Be sure that you are doing your own research beforehand so that you aren’t putting your oral health at risk. By making informed decisions, you can keep your smile healthy!
